Man (28) arrested for possession of firearm

The illegal firearm was seized by the police and sent to ballistics for further investigations.

The Ekurhuleni East sub-district crime-prevention members arrested a man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on January 6 at Hlongwane Section in Katlehong.

This follows a resident lodging a complaint of a fight, which called for police intervenion as there was a firearm involved.

According to Capt Mega Ndobe, upon arrival at the given address, police spotted a BMW vehicle parked on the street next to the house.

Police requested to search the occupants inside the vehicle and one of the passengers was found with a 9mm pistol and seven rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was arrested and detained in the Katlehong SAPS after he failed to produce a licence to carry a firearm.

Ndobe said the firearm was seized and the police will do further investigations to determine who the owner of the firearm is as the serial number has not been erased.

“The firearm will be taken to ballistics in order to determine whether it has been involved in any commission of a crime,” said Ndobe.

Katlehong station commander Brig Albertina Vesi encouraged the community to return unwanted firearms, firearm parts and ammunition to the police stations before the end of the Firearm Amnesty period at the end of January.

The suspect is expected to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court soon.
