Opel in SA has done away with the Adam and the Mokka X, effectively reducing its local line-up to just six cars of which one is a commercial vehicle.

The Grandland X, Crossland X, Astra, Corsa, Combo Life and Combo Cargo are now the only vehicles on offer with just a new version of the Corsa in the pipeline for 2021.

Opel has been battling to negotiate a steep uphill for several years now with local monthly sales seldom reaching three figures.

In November, the century-old German brand managed only 52 sales across SA, ending the month below lesser known car makes like Haval (956) and Suzuki (2016).

As a reminder, Opel launched the Adam in 2015 with funky names depicting the various colours like James Blond (yellow), Purple Fiction (metallic purple) and I’ll be Black (black).

Autodealer tested the 1.0-litre, turbo-charged 85kW Adam Rocks model when it was launched and found the little hatch with its wheels far out in the corners to be a thrilling drive due to the excellent power to weight ratio and dynamics.

Opel launched the Mokka without the ‘X’ prefix just after the Adam, later adding the ‘X’, but still had difficulty persuading buyers to sign on the dotted line.
