Winner takes it all MTN8

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) and MTN launched the 2020 MTN8 Wafa Wafa tournament, and this year’s campaign promises to be a tight affair.

This year’s MTN8 campaign promises to enhance fans’ experience by encouraging them to remake 2020 with the spirit of Wafa Wafa by participating in the tournament engagement activities to stand a chance to win a share of the R8-million worth of prizes.

The kick-off of the tournament is set to take place on October 17 when the defending champions, SuperSport United, will go head on with the latest addition to the DStv Premiership, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM), to secure a spot in the running for the grand prize and to defend their title.

The MTN8 is highly contested by teams that were in the top eight during the 2019/20 season, all competing for the grand prize and the MTN8 title in this knockout competition that has become well known as Wafa Wafa, the winner takes all.

From the teams that will be competing in this year’s tournament, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United have won the title more than once; Cape Town City won it once; while Mamelodi Sundowns, TTM, Bloemfontein Celtics and Maritzburg United have never lifted the prized cup.

It is without a doubt that all these teams will bring their A-game and demonstrate that fighting spirit in the tournament, in the true Wafa Wafa style.

The situation with the pandemic has deprived fans the joy of being at the stadium, experiencing the thrill and excitement from the stands while watching the beautiful game they love and cheering their teams on through singing and chanting.

MTN is urging football fans to remake 2020 with Wafa Wafa this summer while reclaiming their passion for the MTN8 tournament.

To help football fans and consumers create new memories of the MTN8 tournament, while remembering the moments that make this tournament exciting, MTN is bringing back some engagement elements that have become synonymous with the success of the campaign where fans remain an integral part of the tournament.

Through the popular Recharge and Win competition, football fans and consumers will again this year stand a chance to win their share in prizes worth R8-m.

To participate in this competition, all people need to do is to opt into the competition by dialling *144*8# and recharge with R10 or more to be in the running for the life-changing R1-m grand prize.

Through digital engagement, a new addition to this year’s campaign elements, fans and customers are encouraged to download the ayoba app to engage with us on exciting digital content for the duration of the tournament.

For this year’s Goals for Charity initiative MTN and the PSL will donate R20 000 per goal scored in regulated time during the tournament. This amount which was increased from R10 000 was paid per goal last year and will be donated to a charity selected by MTN and the winning team.

“We are celebrating 13 years of Wafa Wafa this year and we could not have reached this milestone without the support of the leadership of the PSL, the participating teams, MTN8 fans, our customers and the media.  “It gives us great joy to know that the MTN8 has become such a significant tournament in the local football scene. This partnership is the demonstration of our commitment to the advancement of local football.

“The fans are vital to football. They are the 12th players of their teams and without their passion and support the MTN8 tournament would not be what it is today,” said Nomsa Mazibuko, GM for brand and communications at MTN SA.
