Find your beautiful summers in your harsh winters

Develop the skill to see things for what they are rather than what you want them to be.

“My dear, in the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm.

I realised, through it all, that in the midst of winter, I found there was within me an invincible summer. And that makes me happy for it says no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.” – Albert Camus

As a results coach, let me share with you three of the many critical skills I teach that you need to develop to see the invincible and beautiful summers in your harsh winters:

1. The ability to self-motivate. This is critical. This is the hallmark of winners. They’re able to keep themselves going forward even when no one believes in them. They become the majority of one.

2. Develop the skill to firstly see things for what they are rather than what you want them to be. When you develop this perspective, you are then able to calmly look for the good in what appears to be messy. This is when you are able to transform your mess into a message.

3. Learn to accept. There are two types of acceptance: passive-acceptance and active-acceptance. Passive-acceptance is accepting things beyond your control, like Covid-19. This is not quitting or a giving-up response.

Active-acceptance is about accepting failure or setback as a temporary thing instead of seeing it as something permanent. If you see something you can change as permanent, that’s resignation.

That’s when you apply a permanent solution to a temporary situation, which is called learned helplessness.
