New SA-bound Maserati MC20 breaks cover

Italian carmaker Maserati has pulled back the covers off its MC20 sportscar that opens up a new era for the brand.

In case you are wondering about the name, MC20 stands for Maserati Corse 2020 (“Maserati Racing 2020”) and celebrates the brand’s racing comeback.

Numbers first. The Maserati MC20 spawns a 3.0 V6 engine called the ‘Nettuno’ with 463kW of power and 729Nm of torque. Maserati claims the MC20 can hurdle from a standstill to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds en route to a top speed of 325 km/h.

The engine is paired with an eight-speed oil-immersed Dual Clutch transmission with 6 power and two overdrive speeds to ensure emissions compliance.

The engine is fully developed my Maserati and it benefits from the Maserati Twin Combustion Technology. According to Maserati, the MC20 sportscar performs superlatively on the road, with excellent driveability, comfort and safety. The interior combines luxury and exclusiveness integral to all the Maserati models.

The MC20 will be built at Viale Ciro Menotti where the GranTurismo and GranCabrio cars used to be assembled, and completed with a completely new painting plant.

Maserati says the MC20 weighs just under 1 500kg thanks to a carbon fibre chassis and composite. Speaking of the exterior, the MC20 features horizontal LED rear lights, dual exhaust tips as well as a large carbon fibre diffuser.

Buyers can order the MC20 in six different colours: Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma, and Grigio Mistero.

The MC20 is scheduled to go on sale in South Africa in early 2021.
