With the tough economic climate, parents are under pressure to look for extra streams of income. The lockdown led many parents to have plenty of time at their disposal meaning they were able to page through magazines and watch a whole lot more television than usual. They may come across children modelling different products and flirted with the idea of getting their child to model. But is this a good idea?

Exposing your child to a whole new world

Although at this point, you might have opted for modelling as a means to financial gain to assist your family during these turbulent times, you need to be cognisant that you are exposing your child to a whole new world of flashy world of dressing-up, wearing make-up, being photographed and weekends spent  in studios. It may seem like an easy way to either boost your child’ s self-esteem, expose him or her to a whole new world while making money at the same time.

In your dreams

Sometimes your child may have the looks that the modelling agency is looking for but their personally might not match the job but you still force them to be a model. Be wary though that you are not projecting your own ideals and dreams onto your cute four-year old.  Help your child pursue modelling if they are gifted and allow and assist them to develop their talent.

A world of fierce competition

The world of modelling often lures young girls into a new reality of fierce competition; with the prospect of huge financial gain. How often have we heard of young girls putting their education on hold to pursue a career in modelling? With slim bodies and clear skin they are a photographer and a designer’s dream, both on the catwalk and in the press. These girls are under tremendous pressure to look good all the time and to remain thin. Be careful not to put unnecessary pressure on your child that can drive them to grow up with an eating disorder.

A breeding ground for eating disorders

This is often a breeding ground for the start of eating disorders in order to retain the look required by modelling agencies. We live in an age of body shaming and magazines promote the size zero type of model. Your child may be under pressure and end up putting unnecessary pressure on themselves.

Don’t let fame get into their heads

In the world of gifted children, where the competition is fierce, there are always elements of jealousy, and dishonesty, often unhealthy rivalry. Even in these circumstances, your young and gifted child should know how to react and how to remain true to themselves
