Embarking on a safari in the largest Big Five game reserve in South Africa promises to be an exhilarating experience, surrounded only by untouched wilderness and wildlife. The bush is well known to relax the mind and talk to the soul but it’s always great to dust off after a safari and include a visit to an idyllic beach in Mozambique. Spending some time on the beach affords an opportunity to soak up the sun and do as little as possible.
Although some parts of Mozambique are accessible by car, many of the popular destinations require a 4×4 vehicle. It is also advisable not to drive at night and to adhere to the strict rules enforced by the Mozambican traffic department. These rules stipulate that all passengers must wear seat belts and that using a mobile phone whilst driving is not permitted. One must also adhere to the speed limit of 60 Km/h when traveling through towns and one must have a vehicle insurance certificate, reflective jacket, and two warning hazard triangle.
The Mozambican coastline can be accessed from any of the Kruger gates but the Phalaborwa gate is only 90 kilometres from the Giriyondo border post. From the northern reaches of the Kruger, it is also possible to travel to the Pafuri border post, crossing into the Limpopo National Park and then to the north coast of Maputo.
The main border from South Africa is at Komatipoort, which is open 24 hours a day during the peak holiday seasons. It is the best gate to use when heading to Maputo.Arriving in Maputo. You then have the option to head south to Ponto do Ouro or north to regions such as Xai Xai.
There are many smaller islands that surround Maputo such as Inhaca Island and Ponta Mamoli They are both perfect destinations in which to unwind and enjoy some incredible diving opportunities and dolphin sightings.
If you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle, it is advisable to drive to Maputo and have your lodge collect you, or take a short flight and explore breathtaking islands such as Vilanculos, Pemba, Bazaruto, Benguerra Island, and the Quirimbas Archipelago.
With some extra time, it is possible to enjoy a safari in the Kruger and then travel into Swaziland where you can experience game reserves, go on hiking trails, and enjoy the Swazi culture. Once exiting Swaziland; you can travel to Kosi Bay or head to Sodwana, Cape Vidal or Durban.
