On this day in history: Beyoncé and Jay-Z secretly got married

On 4 April 2008, Singer Beyoncé married her long-time boyfriend, rapper Jay-Z in a small ceremony at a 13,500-square foot penthouse apartment in New York.

The couple didn’t make any announcement of their nuptials but opted to have a private wedding at Jay-Z’s New York apartment after six years of will-they-or-won’t-they speculation.

People magazine at the time said that the ceremony was followed by a lavish party at the apartment that was attended by the couple’s family and many celebrities. DJ Cassidy, one of Jay’s favourites was also there as well as Beyoncé’s sister Solange, Destiny’s Child members Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland also attended.

Jay and Beyoncé were reported to have secured a marriage licence in Scarsdale, New York, a short car ride from their Manhattan home. That report was met with some skepticism, given that it was April Fool’s Day.
