Paralympic medalist commits to Soweto Marathon

Fondly known as The People’s Race, this year's Soweto Marathon has attracted another superstar to the start line: Paralympic medalist Louzanne Coetzee.

The 29-year-old Bloemfontein-based blond, says that this event wasn’t in her schedule, but found she simply couldn’t say ‘no’ to a second medal.

“I ran the Soweto Marathon a few years back: It’s an incredible race with a vibe that’s quite unrivalled. This time though, I don’t want to race it: I want to enjoy it, soak in Soweto and celebrate our people, history and country. I am honoured that the Soweto Marathon Trust invited my guide Claus Kempen and I back – it is a race that is a privilege to participate in.

The race will also be a celebration of the Louzanne Coetzee Foundation, which myself, Claus and a third partner Mating Monokoane will launch shortly. The Foundation will be aimed at supporting disabled athletes to help them achieve their greatest potential.”

Soweto Marathon Trust Chairman Sello Khunou warmly welcomes Louzanne and Claus;

“What a wonderful way to celebrate our 27th edition: By welcoming one of our country’s most incredible athletes in Louzanne. The Soweto Marathon is known for being one of the most challenging races on our SA calendar: And this accomplished and talented athlete runs it blind, guided by the equally talented Claus Kempen.

From a personal point of view, I cannot wait to see this pair in action: Absolute inspiration and I am truly humbled by their commitment to our race, the sport and our country. Soweto will welcome you out on the route, I have no doubt!”

Louzanne concludes that having a more enjoyable run than last time is her key objective;

“When I ran the Marathon last time, I hit a wall at round 24km and never recovered after that. It is a brutal route and not a run to be taken lightly in my opinion – the Soweto Marathon demands respect and you’ll pay for it if you don’t train correctly and maintain discipline from start to finish. So, for me, it’s enjoyment all the way this time round, come November 6th!”
