Mapimpi shows the great heritage of Eastern Cape rugby history

Map1mp1 premieres on SuperSport Grandstand (201) on March 27 at 20:00.

The documentary of one of South Africa’s rugby heroes will capture the imagination of the rugby-loving fans in the country.

Ryobi has created an industry first to produce the Map1mp1 documentary from the Eastern Cape.

It has turned the attention to the ‘won’t quit’ mentality of Makazole Mapimpi, and the rich heritage of Eastern Cape rugby, in general.

John Stevens, CEO Ryobi South Africa, said, “We are passionate and proud South Africans and are committed to empowering our customers with the right tools to solve the unique challenges our countrymen and women face on a daily basis.”

A complex and nuanced story told from the perspective of award-winning journalist Sibusiso Mjikeliso, who conducts interviews with the various subjects between the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The documentary director, Bongani Morgan, of Dinner at Somizi’s fame), said, “Map1mp1 is a hero’s journey story structure like no other, considering the trials and tribulations Makazole had to tackle in order to become the first South African to score a try in a Rugby World Cup final.

From Twecu to Tokyo, we uncover the raw Eastern Cape culture, juxtaposed with maladministration, it’s a doccie layered in dichotomy, especially with some of our country’s finest talent being Eastern Cape exports, the likes of Siya Kolisi, Lukhanyo Am and Ndungane brothers, to name a few.

“It’s been a highlight of my career working on this project. Thank you to Ryobi for having the vision and bravery to tell this story, and to Makazole for allowing us to tell it.”

Stevens said, “Map1mp1 is a celebration of the grit, determination and hustle associated with being South African. We are so proud to see it flighting after the nearly 18 months of work that has been invested in it by our partners, Retroactive and 10th Street.”
