Nigel Football Club kickstarts the season

The Nigel Football Club won one of three matches when they participated in a tournament over the weekend.

NIGEL – On the weekend of February 27 and 28, the Nigel Football Club took part in the Super League Play-Offs in Bedfordview.

This was the third time the team participated in this particular competition.

“It was a tough exercise for the boys,” said Quinton Williams, spokesperson of the team.

“But winning would do so much more than just be an exercise round for them. It would uplift the whole community as a result.”

On Saturday morning, the team played their first match of the tournament against Sibiya Football Club. They lost the match-three to one.

“The game was outstanding,” Williams commented.

“Nigel Football Club dominated the game in all areas but had more than seven clear goal-scoring opportunities, which they did not convert into goals.”

The team played their second match against the Italian 2 Touch Club team on Saturday afternoon. They lost this match two to one.

“The second match was much like the first. They played an outstanding game but did not use the goal-scoring opportunities they had,” Williams said.

“We got a penalty in the last five minutes of the match, and had we scored we would have tied the match.”

In their final match on Sunday, the team played at the Vosloorus Stadium against the Luso Africa Club at noon. The team won the match two to one.

“Their final game was good. They missed a lot of opportunities, like the day before, but in the end, they won the match. I am very proud of the team and their performance, but we will need to work on our finishing in front of the goals.

“We took part in this tournament not only for our supporters but also for our late chairperson, Younis Alli,” concluded Williams.

“We would also like to thank Kemo Wheel and Tyre in Nigel for providing the team with their uniforms.”
