School children treated for gas inhalation

Unknown gas substance released in a school bus transporting children to Kudung Middle School.

On July 28, school children were exposed to an unknown gas substance on their way to Kudung Midde School in Boschfontein.

It is reported the gas was released in the school bus in which the children were travelling. The gas substance affected a number of scholars.

It is believed about 10 children needed to be taken to various hospitals in the area to be treated for gas inhalation.

Various others were treated on the scene.

Ratanda SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Moss Maluleke said: “The cause and gas used is still being investigated.

“At the moment it is suspected it could have been pepper spray that was used but there is no confirmation as yet.
“No gas cannisters or any evidence has been found.

“The incident is under investigation. We will give feedback as soon as more information comes to light, be it about the health of the children or the gas substance that was used.”
