Doors open to revamped Alra Park Library
The library is a beacon of knowledge offering various activities to enhance reading and skills development.
The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) officially reopened Alra Park Library on November 22 after being closed for almost three years.
The facility was partially closed for three years because of urgent maintenance and renovation work.
Karin Muller, CoE divisional head of Library and Information Services, said Alra Park Library is a small facility, and many are using it.
The city identified a need to upgrade the facility and because of its poor condition, maintenance and renovations had to be done to the infrastructure.
Executives from the CoE, the community of Alra Park and children from the local schools all gathered at the opening event on Friday.
Ward 88 Clr Wollaston Labuschagne opened the proceedings and said the opening of the upgraded library was much anticipated.
Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza said during the proceedings the community of Alra Park now has a newly revamped library and must look after the facility as it is not just a library but a beacon of hope and a vibrant hub for all to learn and grow.
Besides the books for young and old, some activities offered at the library are study spaces with internet access, computer literacy training, skills development, book clubs, career guidance, the Born to Read programme, spelling bees to boost reading skills and many more.
The message from Community Services MMC Bridget Thusi was: “Together we stand, with the future in our hands. Knowledge is power. This is your space to learn, grow, and explore.”
She also invited everyone in Alra Park to embrace the opportunities and make the most of this incredible community resource.
After Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane and Xhakaza cut the ribbon to announce the opening of the new Alra Park library, attendees could tour the facility. The children were entertained by Omo and Lollie the clowns.
