The Gauteng East District e-Learning unit hosted its first Information and Communication Technology (ICT) awards on October 10 at Springs Secondary School.
The awards recognised and celebrated the innovative use of ICT in education within the district. The objective was to acknowledge and honour schools that have demonstrated exemplary integration of ICT in teaching and learning.
It was also to encourage and inspire other schools to embrace ICT as a tool for education enhancement and showcase principals’ achievements in ICT innovations while emphasising their impact on education, leadership and innovative approach in deploying ICT infrastructure and their contribution to advancing technological capabilities in their schools.
School teacher Praneeta Aheer said the benefit of technology in education far outweighs any uncertainties one might have.
Education can embrace technology and enhance the potential to transform education,” said Aheer.
Gauteng East director Somikazi Chabalala said it was an honour for the district to celebrate the transformative power of ICT.
“We are honouring excellence and celebrating the boundless potential that technology brings to our lives,” said Chabalala.
She highlighted ICT’s vital role in education and the integration of Fourth Industrial Revolution skills as a focus area that would prepare the system for a new era of development.
“This is a first of its kind within 15 districts in the province.
“The integration of ICT in our schools is about providing devices or internet connectivity and transforming the entire learning experience by incorporating digital tools and platforms into the classroom.
“We are creating an environment where learners can engage technologically in their subjects and access the world of information at their fingertips”.
She praised deputy chief education specialist Dorothia Moeketse and her team for being pioneers in the district and visionaries in carrying out the successful ICT awards in the district.
