Local historian launches his first book

His love for history was the driving force behind the book.

Renowned local historian Tony Burisch recently published his first book, Heidelberg SAR News.

Burisch, well-versed in Heidelberg’s history and the Second Anglo-Boer War, has dedicated his latest work to exploring the town’s history from 1895 to 1897.

As part of his ongoing research, Burisch has been digitising historical records related to Heidelberg, including the Heidelberg SAR News from 1895 to 1923.

His passion for South African history, particularly the Anglo-Boer War, has led him to visit numerous historical sites across the country.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Burisch moved to South Africa with his family at the age of 12.

He settled in Heidelberg in 1978 and established a concrete and plastic moulds business, from which he retired in 2014.

Burisch is a key member and driving force behind the Heidelberg Heritage Association and is actively involved in the unveiling of historical blue plaques.

Inspired by a heritage symposium in 2017, Burisch embarked on his book project. He collected historical photos and documents from various sources, including Adele Momberg, John Pritchard, and Brigadier General Gerhard Kamffer.

The idea for the book came from Burisch’s analysis of digitised newspapers. He compiled the information into a book format and supplemented it with relevant images.

Burisch is now working on his second book, which will focus on Heidelberg’s role in the Second Anglo-Boer War.
