Women walk in victory to celebrate Woman’s Month

The ladies started their walk together, hand in hand, as catalysts for change, and champions of equality as a celebration of International Women's Day.

A 5km fun walk for the Ekurhuleni Women in Nigel was held on August 23 as part of Women’s Month celebrations.

Approximately 75 ladies gathered at the John Vorster Stadium to participate in the walk.

Ilze Willemse, resident and coordinator of the Nigel Clean initiative, was part of the organising team and addressed the ladies before they embarked on the walk.

She said Women’s Day is a day that honours the incredible achievements of women.

Ilze Willemse, Anne Maloka, Refiloe Kekana-Rakosa and Charnelle Borcherds about to start the 5km walk.

“Each of us carries stories highlighting women’s strength. Stories of breakthroughs, challenges overcome, and ceilings shattered. But today is not just about recognising those milestones; it is about envisioning a future where gender does not limit potential,” she said.

She asked the ladies to imagine a world nurturing the bright ideas of girls without hesitation, where their dreams are supported unconditionally and empowered girls grow into empowered women.

“Remember, when we uplift women, we elevate entire communities. We foster innovation, economic growth, and social progress. Studies show companies with women in leadership roles outperform their counterparts; this is no coincidence. Women bring unique perspectives and solutions that drive us forward,” Willemse added.

She also talked about the barriers that still exist as women globally continue to face disparities in pay, representation, and opportunities and that it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of these challenges. She urged everyone to remember that change starts with yourself – in the workplace, in teams, and within everyone’s hearts.

The day ended with an aerobic session on the main field at John Vorster Stadium.

“Let’s be advocates for one another. Encourage open dialogue about gender equality and inclusivity. Share your experiences and listen to those of others.

“When we build a culture of understanding and support, we can help dismantle the stereotypes that hold us all back,” Willemse said and added the importance of mentorship amongst women.

“Whether you are a woman helping another woman or an ally supporting your colleagues, your guidance can light the way. We all need someone to believe in us, to encourage us to reach higher, think bigger, and challenge the status quo. Together, we can pave the way for the next generation of leaders,” she said.

She concluded her speech by asking all the ladies to celebrate their victories, big and small, as every step toward equality deserves recognition.

“When a woman wins a promotion, let’s cheer her on. When someone speaks out against bias, let’s amplify their voice. In doing so, we cultivate an environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered.

“As we mark this special occasion, let us commit ourselves to creating a world where gender does not limit anyone’s potential. Together, we can accelerate progress for all, and we can create a workplace where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive, innovate, and lead,” she concluded.
