Blaze threatens nature reserve

Various teams were dispatched to bring the fire under control.

A huge veld fire, discovered on July 28, rages in the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve.

One team was dispatched to battle the blaze and get the fire under control.

On July 29, WOF (Working on Fire-Kishungu joint venture) dispatched 60 firefighters to help douse the fire and keep it under control.

The firefighters sent to assist were from the Vaal Marina, Roodeplaat, Abe Bailey and Suikerbosrand bases.

“The magnitude of the fire required more firefighters on the scene. Our teams are doing all they can to bring the fire under control and avoid any loss of lives and destruction of property. We have 60 firefighters working on it.

The nature reserve has various wildlife that needed rescuing from this inferno. Most of the teams were dispatched early this morning because the intensity of the fire grew. The grass is dry, therefore susceptible to scorch at this time of the year. ’’ said Khomotso Moagi, the WOF grounds operations manager in Gauteng.

“Community members are urged not to try and put out the fire in the area. Our firefighters are professionally trained to deal with deadly fires like this one in Suikerbosrand. There is wind, which makes it cumbersome to contain fire easily.’’
