CoE gets new finance MMC

Jongizizwe Dlabathi is Ekurhuleni’s new Finance MMC.

Jongizizwe Dlabathi was appointed the CoE’s new MMC for finance.

In terms of the provisions in Section 60 of the Municipal Structures Act: “The Executive Mayor must appoint a Mayoral Committee from among the councillors to assist the Executive Mayor to fulfil his mandate”.

In light of recent changes to the mayoral committee’s finance portfolio, and after careful consideration and extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders, Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza is pleased to announce the appointment of Dlabathi as the Finance MMC.

“Alderman Dlabathi brings strategic acumen and extensive expertise in local government practice to this role, having served as the whip of council since 2016,” said Xhakaza.

“Furthermore, he currently holds the position of provincial chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in Gauteng.”

As the provincial chairperson of SALGA, Dlabathi was instrumental in promoting good governance and effective financial management across Gauteng municipalities.

His efforts focused on ensuring the financial viability of municipalities and supporting the drive for good governance, which is critical for improving cash flow liquidity and the overall financial health of local governments.

“I am confident his appointment will significantly strengthen our institutional capacity, supporting our efforts to enhance financial sustainability and optimise revenue enhancement in the city,” said Xhakaza.

“Moreover, this appointment will assist the city in addressing the regression from losing our clean audit opinion from the auditor-general of SA.

“We are also pleased to inform the residents of Ekurhuleni that the recruitment process for a new group chief financial officer is in its final stages.

“This timely development aligns perfectly with our preparations for the upcoming audit period, ensuring we have strong financial leadership in place to support our fiscal responsibilities and enhance our financial management processes.

“This strategic addition to our team underscores our commitment to ensuring sound financial management and improving service delivery agility to our community.

“I congratulate Alderman Dlabathi on his new responsibilities. His proven leadership and dedication to public service make him an invaluable asset to our team, and I have full confidence he will excel in this critical role.”
