Devon hosts Youth Day celebrations

“We celebrated the lives of the youth who died for our freedom.”

The Greater Devon United Peoples Project (GREDD-UP) held a Youth Day event at Impumelelo, Devon, on June 16.
GREDD-UP is an NPO, and the event commemorated the youth who died for freedom in SA.

The current donors offer according to their corporate social investment objectives and personal compassion for their local rural community needs.

“We celebrated the lives of the youth who died for our freedom’s cause with singing, dancing and poetry. The Sarafina dance troupe was the main attraction on this eventful day. Much hard work and determination from the children as young as four made the Sarafina play the day’s hit. Youth Day poetry followed. Then, the platform opened for the youngsters to show off their dancing skills. One of the poem reader’s dancing skills captivated the audience, and the youngsters fully enjoyed her dancing moves,” said Liesl Rittles, the founding member of GREDD-UPP.

Rittles sent thanks to all of their donors, who donated vegetables, mealie meal, food items and pizzas, which filled the children’s day with ear-to-ear smiles.

GREDD-UPP distributed 39 pairs of school shoes, all donated by one donor.

The school shoes went to children who walk to school either barefooted with blisters on their feet or with school shoes too small or too big.

“We know many school-going children who need a new pair of school shoes each year. The children and parents had breakfast, lunch and pizzas afterwards to mark this important day in SA history. Our organisation’s disability beneficiaries were not forgotten. It hand-delivered pizza slices to the disabled children/beneficiaries,” said Rittles.

GREDD-UPP has diversified activities, programmes and activities ranging from indoor and outdoor sports, skills development, entrepreneurial training, artisan training on-site, food and vegetable garden projects, sewing and computer classes, drama, dancing and singing classes and after-school reading classes for primary school children.

“We thank the SAPS for their visibility and protection rendered on this memorable day. As the GRED-UPP team, we thank everyone for their support that made this memorable event possible,” said Rittles.
