SAPS sensitise taxi drivers, hawkers

The police reminded the taxi drivers and hawkers to work within the law.

Taxi drivers and the law were the focus of an outreach programme conducted by the local SAPS at the Heidelberg Taxi Rank on June 5.

Heidelberg station commander Colonel Phiwe Ndwandwe engaged the taxi drivers and hawkers operating at the rank.

The programme urged the taxi drivers to pay their traffic fines and be part of the Heidelberg Taxi Association to fall within the law when operating in the area. Officers sensitised them about picking up hitchhikers.

Ndwandwe also asked the various taxi associations to work with the SAPS to curb violations and help prevent crimes associated with illegal taxis and hitchhikers.

The roads identified as crime hotspots are the N3 and the R23.

Ndwandwe warned the hawkers of the consequences of buying illegal and stolen goods because the offenders could face prosecution.

He pleaded with the taxi drivers and hawkers to work with the SAPS and report crimes instead of supporting criminals.
