Fostering futures for families

Organisation's heart is in the community.

The Rensburg branch of the SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse Vroue Federasie) is a beacon of light for the community.

The SAVF is a nationally registered welfare organisation dedicated to serving since 1904.

The SAVF’s mission is to care for, support, and foster a brighter future for individuals and families across South Africa.

The Rensburg branch staff comprises three social workers; Abel Mugwena (office manager), Pearl Munyathi and Bongi Mkwanazi, and an auxiliary worker.

The branch, situated on AG Visser Street, is there for all residents and currently assists families in Ratanda, Shalimar Ridge and Vaal smallholdings, among others.

They assist in foster care, child protection and foster parenting assistance.

Also on the premises is a crèche called Werkende Handjies, registered to accommodate 63 children. It at present has 40 children in attendance.

Mugwena has been a social worker since 2015 when he graduated from UNISA, and has been part of the Rensburg branch since.

“At the branch, it is not easygoing as we see the hardships in the community. We try to assist where we can,” said Mugwena.

“The cost of staying in operation is a big struggle for us.

“We have many challenges, but we are committed to the community and that keeps us going.”

In 2023, they assisted 3 500 beneficiaries and 600 families in the catchment region, which included casework and placing children in foster care.

In the same year, the office suffered a burglary where the thieves stole a lot of equipment.

They could only replace two computers to continue their work.

There is a need for donations to keep the branch operating successfully.

These items include baby products, clothing, toys, educational equipment and finances.

They also need temporary foster parents, volunteers and people with a heart for the community.
