A 2-0 win over the weekend moved Cambridge football club into second position on the league table.
Cambridge Football Club from Nigel hosted Joburg City Football Club on April 14 at the Duduza Stadium.
Cambridge was too strong for Joburg City.
Players started the match being careful and tried to exploit Joburg City’s weaknesses.
Cambridge had two chances to score in the first half but could not find the back of the net on both occasions.
The first half was scoreless.
When the second half got underway, both teams introduced new players to the match, and there was a greater urgency to create opportunities to score.
Cambridge striker Ignatius Makgopa Nyathi scored twice to give Cambridge a 2-0 lead.
Joburg City tried hard to score, but Cambridge played like a team on a mission and did not allow any goals to be scored.
“I am happy we collected the maximum points to move us up the table. It is only up to the boys now to maintain that position” said coach Minhle Cooper Dineka Mthimkhulu.
“We want to thank the fans for rallying behind the team. The club donated nonperishable food to the JMN Foundation, which helps young girls overcome drug addiction. We have to give back to the community, and as a club, we will continue to build and uplift the community,” said club chairperson Ignatius Maphike.
