Nigel Bowling Club renames greens

The top green was named after a father and son duo.

The Nigel Bowling Club (NBC) hosted a Renaming of the Greens event on March 15.

NBC decided to rename the greens after individuals they all knew and loved over the years.

They named the top green after a father and son duo, George and Noel Van der Miller. George joined the club in 1973 and was a member for 50 years. In 1990, he was elected club president and held the post for six years.

In 1989, he won his first singles club championship and kept that position for five years. In 1994, he was the Eastern Transvaal singles senior champion.

He represented NBC in many pairs and singles competitions over the years.

After his death, his son, Noel, was a driven successor. He was elected president in 2013 and held the post for seven years.

“For the work done in the bar area, and for the lifelong commitment by his father, we are thrilled to name the top green the Van der Miller Green to show our appreciation and gratitude,” Susan Kruger, club secretary, said.

The bottom green was renamed after a much-loved and respected nominee, Mike Sharp, who’s done an immense amount for the club and been actively involved for many years.

He became a member in 1973 and has been a member for 50 years, managing the greens. He was involved in upgrading the kitchen and ensuring the club survived the Covid-19 period.

He involved himself in league games and presented NBC at many events and tournaments, which included cities like Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, keeping the club’s name high. He won his first club championship in 2006 and held that title for seven years. In 2007, he and his team won the Eastern Transvaal midweek league fours and represented NBC at the Nationals Championship, where they won one section.

“Due to his love for the game and his commitment to the club, we are honoured to name the bottom green after him to show our gratefulness,” Kruger said.
