Lesedi Community Centre makes an impact

Resources and social workers are under pressure as they are dealing with large amount of cases.

The primary mission at Lesedi Community Centre (LCC) is to feed, house, uplift and train the destitute, poor and broken in the community of Heidelberg.

“There is a big need in the local community. However, the need and assistance we provided over the past year had to stretch to areas outside Heidelberg as well,” said Jaco Kritzinger, manager of LCC.

“We do our best to fulfill our mission but the basic human needs of people struggling in all communities are on the increase. While there are more and more families in need of food, our donations of non-perishable food have decreased,” he added.

Lezanne Scholly, a counsellor at LCC, said that resources and social workers are under pressure as they are dealing with a large amount of cases.

Based on the statistics for 2023, LCC has made a huge impact in overall community care, skills training, job creation and counselling sessions, and achieved the following results in 2023:

• 221 beneficiaries assisted

• 75 sent for out-patient drug treatment at SANCA Heidelberg

• 4 in-patient drug treatment (Freedom Recovery Centre, Horizon Clinic and Jumela Treatment Centre)

• 49 received employment

• 27 reunified with families

• 30 living independently

• 45 received IDs

• 13 assisted with driver’s licenses

• 4 placed in specialised facilities (old age, disability or mental health facilities.)

• 171 assisted with SASSA applications

• 772 group work sessions conducted

• 1 073 counselling sessions conducted
