Mayor leads Back-to-School campaign

The mayor and his team visited various schools with dental and health assistants to screen learners voluntarily and encourage healthy living.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana and his team of MMCs crisscrossed Ekurhuleni to do spot checks to ensure the academic year started without any hindrances on January 17.

This was part of the Gauteng government’s annual Back-to-School campaign, which sees the premier and MECs spread throughout the province to motivate learners and ensure the start of the academic year is flawless.

Provincial and local leaders visited various schools, including Early Childhood Development centres. In Ekurhuleni alone, they visited six schools and four daycare centres. The leaders’ message to learners and teachers was about strong discipline in education and pursuing excellence.

“You need to fully commit to class attendance and begin working hard as early as now so you lay a firm foundation for your final exam at the end of the year. You must study daily to ensure you achieve excellence,” said Ngodwana during a visit to one school.

Meanwhile, the government also brought dental and holistic health services for learners’ voluntary screening. The aim was to encourage youngsters to use the free health services available in their communities because a healthy body harbours a healthy mind.
