Flood risk: Ekurhuleni emergency services on high alert

The public should be vigilant and careful at this time.

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams and firefighters are on high alert after the city experienced heavy downpours since this morning (Tuesday).

The teams are closely watching flood-prone areas around the city. This also includes low-lying bridges, informal and formal settlements next to water streams, and the entire city where life-threatening emergencies can erupt.

Some safety tips to consider:

• Adults should collect children from schools and walk them safely home.

• Pedestrians should avoid walking on flooded bridges with water at ankle level or higher.

• Motorists should avoid driving across low-lying bridges covered by water.

• Motorists should keep a good following distance from each other.

• Maintain a slower speed to avoid accidents.

• Roadworthiness of vehicles’ roadworthiness is paramount (good tyre treads and wiper blades should be fully functional).

• Littering blocks stormwater drain systems. Avoid littering at all costs.

In case of a life-threatening emergency, call 011 458 0911 so that the nearest rescue team can be dispatched for intervention, or the following numbers: 10177 (toll-free from a landline) and 112 (free from any cellphone).
