Wellness initiative successful in Heidelberg

The wellness activity was also regarded as a Women's Month celebration.

Various stakeholders recently took part in the #TISH Wellness Initiative at the Ratanda Hostel.

On August 24, the Heidelberg Hospital partnered with the likes of SASSA, SANCA, the Department of Community Safety, the Lesedi Local Municipality and others for the initiative coordinated by the Sedibeng District Health Services.

TISH is a programme aimed at enhancing the livelihood of people living in townships, informal settlements and hostels where eradication of crime, poverty, corruption, vandalism and lawlessness takes priority.

During her speech, the MEC for Gauteng’s Department of Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko vowed the following:

“I will discipline all government officials who find comfort in taking a back seat when servicing those clients seeking medical assistance from Gauteng health facilities.”

Community members were able to enquire about various services offered by the various government departments and their partners, which included the Heidelberg Hospital’s clinical forensic medical services as well as the Heidelberg Hospital’s clinical support and therapeutic services.

On August 25, the initiative continued with various staff members of the Heidelberg Hospital embarking on a series of activities for the day.

A 3km fun walk was also on the agenda.

“First on the agenda was a 3.5km fun walk to promote maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” said Nabo Vilakazi of the hospital.

“The wellness activity was also regarded as a Women’s Month celebration and several of our male staff members dressed up to showcase their support and appreciation for women.”

After the fun walk, the members took part in the second instalment of the day’s wellness activities, which included an aerobics exercise.

Community members could enquire about various medical services on the day.

“Later in the afternoon, our activities moved to the Khanya Lesedi Secondary School in Ratanda, where the Heidelberg Hospital met our match against the Gauteng EMS in netball and soccer,” Vilakazi said.

The Heidelberg Hospital lost both matches against the Gauteng EMS, with the netball game ending with a final score of 10-15 and the soccer match ending 3-1.

“The event was a great success,” Vilakazi said.

“It was an honour to see people coming out in numbers to enquire about services rendered to them by the various government departments and community-based organisations right on their doorstep. As the Heidelberg Hospital, we commit ourselves to the community.”
