August is dedicated to celebrating women in SA and pays tribute to the women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, to protest legislation to tighten the apartheid regime’s control over the movement of black women in urban areas.

Women’s Month began with women in law enforcement in Ekurhuleni conducting an operation on Monday in the Dunnottar policing area.

The operation included a roadblock at Wit Road, a safer school awareness campaign, patrols and the enforcement of by-laws.

August is dedicated to celebrating women in SA and pays tribute to the women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, to protest the extension of the then-pass law on women.

The station commander of the Dunnottar SAPS, Captain Buyisile Mvelase, encouraged the women to be bold, smart and not let the circumstances derail them from their duties.

The campaign started with a random search at Laerskool Dunnottar. The police found no dangerous weapons or drugs on the premises.

Afterwards, Inspector Fourie addressed the learners about discipline and the dangers of drug abuse.

The operation ended with an awareness campaign at Tonk Meter Crossing, where the SAPS distributed pamphlets on contact crimes and drug abuse.

The operation ended with 17 fines totalling R7 000 issued for contravening the Road Traffic Act.
