Living Madiba’s legacy

The partnership between the City of Ekurhuleni and AfriSam will see 18 houses handed to disabled community members.

Members of the CoE’s mayoral committee and Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana visited Mackenzieville and Nigel on July 18.

The visit, a Mandela Day initiative, saw them paint several new RDP houses and plant trees.

“As a yardstick, we are to give 67 minutes of our time to honour Madiba’s legacy,” Ngodwana said.

Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana painted some of the houses.

“But we must do more than just one hour and seven minutes.

“Today’s activities in Mackenzieville are a perfect example of taking a page out of Madiba’s legacy.

“We are celebrating collaborations between the public and private sector, resulting in a beautiful thing, these homes for the needy.”

Desmond Buitendag (Ward 82 Clr), Ronnie Smith and Dennis Metsana (community leaders) supported the day’s events.

AfriSam, as part of its social corporate responsibility, built 18 RDP houses for disabled community members.

“AfriSam contacted me in 2018 when this project started,” explained DA Ward Clr Wollaston Labuschagne.

“The goal was to build 20 houses, but AfriSam is still waiting on the city to indicate which yards will be allocated for the final two houses.”

AfriSam’s executive of construction materials, Avi Bhoora, helped paint the houses.

Avi Bhoora (the executive of construction materials for AfriSam) said it felt good to give back to the community. “It is always a good feeling,” Bhoora told HERAUT.

The speaker of the council, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, helped Avi Bhoora plant a tree.

“There were various challenges these last few years, but we are thankful to have been able to start this project and see it through.

“These houses will assist community members facing everyday challenges.

“It might not be able to help everyone, but if it makes a difference in one person’s life, it has already been successful.

The speaker of the council, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, with Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana.

“We are grateful for the partnership with Ekurhuleni, which helped us ensure we can give back to those who need it most.”
