Fires see community unite

Strong winds hampered efforts to get the fires under control.

Fires tore through Boschfontein, Sedaven and neighbouring homesteads on June 19.

After the fires were under some control, reports came in from other areas in Heidelberg. According to reports, the fire started on June 18 on the Suikerbosrand hills.

Cattle were caught in the fire in Boschfontein.

It appeared the fire was brought under control, but on June 19, strong winds started the embers again, which quickly spread.

Getting the fires under control proved challenging because the winds often changed direction.

Threatened by the fires were Sedavan Estate and Retirement Village, Boschfontein homesteads towards Siphiwe Village, and the Equestrian Centre.

The houses on the plots were not spared either.

Siphiwe Village was in danger of being devastated by the fire because the blaze was already between the houses.
Firefighters, Working on Fire, volunteers, community members and Lesedi Fire and Rescue ensured everyone was safe.

When the fires seemed contained, the wind again picked up. The fire ravaged huge areas, and some cattle and farm animals died.

The houses in Sipiwe Village also had their share of fires.

Suikerbosrand was the next to need attention, followed by Rensburg, Jordaan Park, Overkruin. Berg-en-Dal, Bankenveld, GC Mouldings and Bergsig.

The firefighters worked through the night to get the fires under control, and businesses in Heidelberg supplied water.
