“First and foremost is the issue that all the reservoirs should have electrical power generation to ensure they do not stop pumping water when there is load-shedding,” Machitje said.

“With load-shedding a part of our daily lives, we feel it is crucial to have a generator on standby.

The electrical boxes are not secured.

“Second, security is not in existence. It would be easy to access any reservoir sites in the Lesedi district.
“The third concern is the electrical boxes are not secured and are easy access for any criminal.

“Fourth, Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) did not even put out any money in the budget for the upkeep of the reservoirs in its latest Integrated Development Planning (IDP).

The missing covers pose a danger when walking in the area.

“The reservoirs need to be kept clean, but LLM is not doing so. There are weeds, rubbish and rubble everywhere in the reservoir confines. It is a hazard.”

There is no security in sight when accessing the reservoir sites, and anyone can enter the sites without questions being asked.

Machitje concluded, “Our reservoirs and infrastructures are vulnerable and must be looked after.

“We, as community members, need to know that the LLM is doing everything in its power to protect the reservoirs.”
