Help local club hosts cross-country event
The club will host the fourth league meeting of the CGA cross-country season in June and needs a total amount of R5 650 to make the event a success.
The East Athletic Club (EAC) is appealing for financial assistance from businesses, organisations and members of the community.
The club will host the fourth league meeting of the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) cross-country season on June 24 at Marivate Park in Daveyton.
Having already secured the venue from the City of Ekurhuleni, the club’s secretary, Monde Maduna, explained they need a total amount of R5 650, which will cover essentials such as mobile toilets, chevrons and tables.
“We need two mobile toilets, 10 rolls of 500m chevrons, 10 tables, 15 chairs and 10 boxes of water sachets to make this event a success.
“It’s very important for the club to host this official cross-country event because it prepares us to host an official race like a 10km or 21km.
“This prestigious event will also create awareness and interest in athletics in Daveyton and Etwatwa,” Maduna said.
According to CGA general manager Mandla Radebe, the club is an affiliate of Athletics South Africa and CGA.
“East Athletic Club is a member in good standing. We’d like to confirm the club is involved with the development and contributes to the overall development of the province through the identification of potential athletes in the City of Ekurhuleni,” said Radebe.
Radebe also confirmed the club will host the cross-country event at Marivate Park.
The EAC was established in 2018 to focus on athletics development in Ekurhuleni. Many of its young athletes, including Thato Sesoko and Mathapelo Ntanga, have established themselves in the middle-distance and cross country events.
Due to a lack of a track and field facility in Daveyton, however, the club only caters for middle-distance events (800m to 10 000m).
Maduna and his team, which includes veteran runner Isaac Ndlovu, are hopeful the cross-country event will help their club increase its pool and that the municipality will make Sinaba Stadium available to them so that their programme could include sprint and field events.
“Parents in and around Benoni and surrounding areas will get to know about this emerging club that is focusing on development.
“Young athletes will also realise that their talent is not only confined to school competitions but there is a club in Daveyton they can join to develop their talent further.
“The event will also help our club recruit more youngsters and take them off the streets of Daveyton. We also want to promote fitness and healthy living within the community.”
