Petition committee visits problem areas

Positive signs to look into service delivery concerns.

Since the latest petitions were brought against Lesedi Local Municipality at the end of 2022 and early 2023, the wheels have started to turn.

The petitions were regarding service delivery or the lack thereof. LLM brought a petition committee to life to look at the various complaints from the community.

The petition committee is made up from various councilors and officials from within LLM.

On March 1, the petition committee went on a walkabout with Ward Nine (Jordaan Park and Heidelberg Central) delegates, Juaandre Heyneke and Albert Oberholzer, to show them hotspots and other concerns.

When showing the various areas and concerns, the officials were shocked to see the decay in the areas and the attention that needs to be given to clean up the area and address the service delivery concerns.

Issues such as cable theft, stolen lamp poles, overgrown sidewalks, pollution in Blesbokspruit, stripped streetlight poles, potholes and crime were pointed out as major concerns.

On March 3, Ward Eight (Rensburg/ Shalimar Ridge/ Industrial) was the next stop. The delegates who brought the petition to life, Antoon Strydom and Trompie van Wyk, showed a few hotspots to the petition committee.

Concerns were raised about service delivery, street lights, potholes, illegal electrical connections, illegal businesses, by-laws not being enforced, water tables pushing up into the houses and streets. illegal dumping and sewage spills not being cleaned up.

Illegal electrical connections are everywhere.

Pheelo Mollo from the petition committee said, “In certain areas we have Geotechnical challenges on a lot of the issues that need to be dealt with. We have our work cut out to get the issues corrected.”

After the outing the petition committee agreed that the concerns are valid and will convene shortly to discuss the issues and get solutions.
