Service delivery issues get the spotlight at general town meeting

Take action and be responsible is the call.

On August 24 a general town meeting was held in the Heidelberg City Hall to discuss infrastructure, electricity, water and service delivery issues.

The meeting was set up by the DA about problems experienced in wards 8, 9 and 10.

The meeting was a-political and anyone was welcome to voice their concerns.

Sieg Paul opened the proceedings and welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Paul said, “To get changes done we need to stand together and make a difference.

“We cannot wait for local authorities to do things in a municipal district.

Clr Sieg Paul opened the proceedings.

“Promises are constantly made but not kept. It’s time for us all to stand together and make a difference.”

Gerry Hotzhauzen went further in saying corruption needs to be stamped out in the municipality.

Holtzhauzen said, “We are here to serve the community. The community needs to be informed of the due processes and issues we are all experiencing in Lesedi.”

Infrastructure issues were high on the agenda, which included service delivery, water and sanitation, potholes and streetlights.

Clr Mirna Mulder.

“A big concern is the national key points in the area that are not protected and allowing vagrants to destroy the structures daily,” said Holtzhauzen.

“Each one of us can make a difference. Even if just as eyes and ears and to report issues as they come up. Now is not the time to do nothing.

“Everyone must be mobilised and help where they can. Local authorities need to be held accountable for their actions.”

Other speakers were Mirna Mulder and Georgia Naidoo.

Mulder said, “We need to be hands-on in the community and ensure that service delivery is a priority.

“Businesses need to take hands to get the areas around them clean and presentable and not fall over rubble lying everywhere.

Clr Georgia Naidoo.

“With unemployment a huge issue, something needs to be done to get idle hands to be an asset and do things in the community.”

Naidoo ended the proceedings by saying, “To get LLC to act on issues in the communities, petitions need to be drawn up and ensure they are signed off and submitted.

“In this way, LLC can see how unhappy the residents are and want changes implemented.”

Clr Gerry Holtzhauzen gave an overview of the issues at hand.

After the meeting, it was clear the community wants change to ensure that better living standards are set for future generations.

The call is for everyone to stand up and be responsible citizens to ensure the community can start showing signs of improvement in their neighbourhoods.
