Awareness is key to preventing hijackings

Hijacking tips to keep you safe.

Hijackings remain a major problem on South African roads, and the N3 between Durban and Johannesburg is a notorious hijacking hotspot.

There are various methods used by hijackers, including fake broken-down vehicles, blocking vehicles on a specific part of the road, targeting motorists at traffic lights, women asking for lifts and many more.

Another concern for SAPS is drivers who are part of the syndicate falsely reporting trucks being hijacked.
Blue light gangs are also very active. Most of the criminals are also heavily armed.

The local SAPS have their hands full with investigations into hijackings and false reports impact their effectiveness to curb crime.

“Heidelberg SAPS receive constant reports of hijackings in the area, and a lot of them are false reports,” said Colonel Phiwe Ndwandwe, Heidelberg police station commander.

“It takes a lot of time to investigate the incidents and takes manpower away from investigating other criminal cases.”

Some safety tips to keep in mind:

• Do not give hitchhikers a lift at any time.

• Do not stop along the road to relieve yourself.

• Do not stop for anyone if the area is not well lit even if the person seems to be law enforcement.

• Only stop when you are sure it is safe to do so. If you are not sure or feel unsafe, drive to an area where you feel comfortable, such as a petrol station or a police station.

• If at any time you are stopped, send a pin location to a family member.
