Operation Shanela yields success

HEIDELBERG – Members of Heidelberg SAPS and other stakeholders were in action at the latest Operation Shanela in the Heidelberg and Ratanda areas on January 4.

During Operation Shanela, they implemented roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, stop-and-go searches, vehicle- and foot patrols, various checks and inspection points.

They also patrolled shopping areas and other hotspots.

Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba, SAPS Vereeniging station commander, requested the law enforcement officials to make sure that criminals do not feel comfortable and to act swiftly to bring them to book.


An unlicensed firearm was confiscated during the operation.

“Every member must be vigilant and conduct all their duties in compliance with the SAPS guidelines,” added Heidelberg SAPS station commander Colonel Phiwe Ndwandwe.

During the operation, the police officers searched 875 people and 671 vehicles. They screened 79 vehicles for roadworthiness, issued several traffic fines and made various arrests.

The arrests were for the possession of an unlicensed firearm (1), possession of drugs and narcotics (3) and possession of illegal cigarettes (2).

The officers also confiscated various items, including a firearm, drugs, cigarettes and a tampered vehicle during the operation.
