Operation Shanela nets 250 suspects

About 279 suspects were arrested during the operation.

Operation Shanela, held in the Ekurhuleni District on November 8 and 9, has been deemed successful.

Various stakeholders such as the SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, wardens, home affairs, the CPF and others conducted the operation.

The operation has also led to a reduction in crime levels throughout the district.

Detectives arrested about 250 people, whom they traced via suspect tracing during Operation Shanela.

Of the suspects, 154 were arrested for contact crimes, 15 for contact-related crimes, 14 for property-related crimes, six for tampering with essential infrastructure, 58 for serious crimes and 32 for GBV.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole further led Operation Shanela on November 9 at the Nigel policing precinct, where 74 traffic fines valued at R29 400 were issued.

About 24 suspects were arrested for being undocumented and five for being in possession of drugs. Two fines were issued to liquor outlets, two to second-hand goods shops and five to spaza shop owners for non-compliance.

The team also seized the drug rock, illicit medicine and creams, dagga, pills and illicit sticks.

An imbizo was also conducted in Alra Park to address some residents’ concerns.

The station commander shared her cellphone number and the sector number with the community.

A school search was done during this time at a primary school to search for dangerous weapons and illicit substances.

About 11 pairs of scissors, a vice grip pliers, a mirror and snuff were seized.

Sithole commended the efforts of the law enforcers in ridding the community of crime.
