Various crimes have recently reared their heads again in Heidelberg.
Some crimes that have been committed are:
• Various vehicles are either hijacked or stolen in Heidelberg. The criminals are not concerned about who sees them and are brazen enough to commit their crimes in broad daylight. They even remove the tracking devices from vehicles before taking them.
• Criminals have been stealing vehicle tyres out of residential yards in Rensburg recently.
• Reports have come to light that a white Toyota Etios is driving around in the suburbs and its occupants rob pedestrians at gunpoint.
• Armed robbery is also on the increase. The criminals also do not worry about what time of day the robbery takes place. These criminals are also not scared to use force to get what they want.
• Hijackings are increasing daily, mainly on the N3 Highway. Other routes are also targeted. The hijackers are usually armed and not afraid to use force if needed.
“The dangers of hitchhiking are immense and picking up hitchhikers is dangerous,” said Heidelberg SAPS station commander Colonel Phiwe Ndwande.
“Refrain from picking up hitchhikers as they do not work alone. In some cases, victims do not escape bodily harm or even death.”
• Home and business robberies are not left out by criminals as well. They are brazen enough to cut through roller shutter doors, security gates, walls, and doors, cut the locks to business premises and steal whatever they can lay their hands on.
“In all instances, do not let belongings lie around, be alert and ensure your premises and property are protected. We are nearing the festive season again, and the better protected you are will curb the current spate of criminal activities,” concluded Ndwandwe.
