Nigel SPCA needs better security, asks for help

The SPCA hopes to gain much-needed funding for an upgraded security system.

The Nigel SPCA had recently seen various break-ins that led to theft on the property.

The first of the recent break-ins occurred on August 29. Thieves allegedly started to strip cables leading to the office building and dug around for more.

The thieves also broke a precast wall and used its slabs to climb over another into the property.

On September 4, criminals stripped the cables completely and emptied the electrical box.

“The SPCA doesn’t have electricity due to an ongoing issue with the municipality that is being sorted out,” said Angela Morris, the chairperson of the SPCA.

“The stolen cables, though frustrating, do not affect us, electricity-wise. But we do feel vulnerable here.”

Morris told HERAUT they fear thieves will break into the office and steal more items on the property.
“We are angry about the break-ins and frustrated because of it,” Morris continued.

The main electric cable leading to the SPCA’s office was also stolen.

“Some of the residents of the small holdings surrounding the Spaarwater area have also indicated to us that there has been an increase in cattle theft in recent weeks.

“Which, of course, is a worry for us because of the lack of a proper security system on the property. “What we desperately need is funding for an upgraded security system,” Morris concluded.

The cable theft was reported to the SAPS.
