Seven SAPS officers in dock

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate arrested the members on various charges.

Seven SAPS officers appeared in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on July 31.

This came after the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested the members from Ekurhuleni on July 28 on charges of aggravated robbery, assault and malicious damage to property.

According to Robbie Raburabu, the IPID national spokesperson, the arrests happened after investigations that these SAPS members terrorised staff at the LM Café in Nigel.

Four members of the Ekurhuleni Infrastructure Unit and three of the Germiston Crime Intelligence Unit were detained at the Nigel Police Station after handing themselves over in Benoni.

The members allegedly assaulted the cafe’s managers, destroyed some property, including a digital video recorder, and stole R150 000 cash.

The members also allegedly confiscated more than 150 boxes of cigarettes but only handed in a fraction of that.
