Cattle thief apprehended

On June 7, a group of farmers gathered at the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court and held a peaceful demonstration asking that bail be denied.

Community members noticed a suspicious vehicle with passengers driving near the weighbridge and Spookbrug on the R23 on June 6.

According to reports, the community members pulled over the truck, and three suspects jumped off the back and ran away.

The driver also tried to flee but was stopped by the community members, who immediately notified the Heidelberg SAPS.

The AfriForum Heidelberg CPF was informed and rushed to the scene as well. On arrival, AfriForum activated their drone to help capture the suspects.

The SAPS searched the vehicle on arrival at the scene.

In the back of the truck’s cabin, bags containing knives, cellphones and other belongings were found and confiscated.

On the back of the truck, they found three heads of cattle, two carcasses and more knives.

The cattle belonged to a Grootvlei farmer, as identified by their branding.

The stock theft was reported to the Heidelberg SAPS.

The driver was arrested on charges of stock theft.
