Cambridge FC crowned champions

Nigel Easter Soccer Tournament success for local club.

NIGEL – Cambridge Football Club emerged as champions at the second annual Greater Nigel Easter Tournament.

The tournament was played at MacKenzieville Stadium in Alra Park, Nigel, from March 30 to April 1.

The tournament was an initiative to celebrate the Easter weekend together as a community in unity through sports with teams from in and around the City of Ekurhuleni.

The teams that participated came from Eden Park, Duduza, Balfour and Nigel. The prize money was a whopping R50 000.

In the first round, Cambridge played against Playas and Hunters. Cambridge did not have it all their own way but walked away with a 1-0 victory against Playas.

In their second match, Cambridge defeated Hunters 1-0. In the quarter-final, Cambridge was drawn against Amathakati FC.

Cambridge had one goal in mind and that was to progress in the tournament. Cambridge emerged as 2-1 winners.

In the semi-final, Cambridge played against Callies from Eden Park. Cambridge was the stronger of the two teams and won 2-1. Cambridge beat Fruitto from Eden Park 1-0 in the final.

“The team needed this. This is a great achievement for the boys and the coach. We have six more league matches left of the season and want to finish strong.

“We want to thank the organisers, sponsors and loyal fans who stood by us throughout the tournament. Your support is what pushed the boys to success and confidence,” said Cambridge club chairperson Ignatius Maphike.
