Locals put themselves to the test

The athletes started the challenge on March 8 and finished on March 10.

HEIDELBERG – Seven residents of the Heidelberg, Nigel and Balfour areas recently participated in a sporting challenge to test their mettle, dedication and stamina.

Morné Strydom, Alta Linström, Ruhan Reyneke, Cobus Martin, Gert van Zyl, Jaco du Plessis and Alida Smit participated in a global challenge named the Goggins Challenge.

They did the challenge on a farm just outside of Heidelberg. Former athlete and US Navy Seal, David Goggins, inspired the Goggins Challenge. During the challenge, each participant must run 6.4km every four hours for 48 hours.

The athletes started their challenge on March 8 at noon, continued on March 9, and finished on March 10 at noon.

The distance they had to complete was 76.8km, and they did it in the extreme heat experienced in the area throughout March.

“Despite the heat, long days, little sleep, hunger, darkness, tired legs, blisters, sore feet, and sunburn, we completed the challenge,” said Linström.

“The participants are all ordinary people with usual day jobs, small children and problems who achieved something extraordinary.

“It makes us wonder if we really dig deep into ourselves to determine our limits or what we are capable of. Are we scared to realise we are so powerful that we are limitless? Does the fear of realising our potential hold us back from reaching the end of what we can achieve?”
