How to stay safe on a busy beach day

As the festive season approaches, many people will be leaving their homes for vacation destinations or will be out on the beaches.

The beach can be a fun place to spend the day, and enjoying the beach is probably a favourite summer activity for many, but it is important to follow safety rules and guidelines, especially on a busy beach day.

In an attempt to keep everyone safe on a busy beach day, the KZN Sharks Board shares some safety tips for the public. This applies to when you are on the sand or in the water.

Babalwa Mpaka, a public relations officer at KZN Sharks Board, advises the public to follow the lifeguards’ guidance and instructions.

Mpaka explains: “Keep an eye on your children at all times. They make announcements over a loudspeaker or you can ask them about beach conditions.”

He highlighted that at the beach, it is important for the public to find and follow posted signs and flags for their safety.

Here are the tips to protect yourselves on a busy beach day as shared by the KZN Sharks Board:

Follow all the beach rules and regulations.
• Avoid drinking alcohol if you are swimming or boating.
• Keep an eye on your children at all times.
• Always swim with a group.
• Do not swim when and where the water is dirty.
• Avoid swimming when bleeding.
• Know where the lifeguards’ stations are.
• Look for signs and postings near the entrance or lifeguard tower.
• Talk with lifeguards for tips and information about the beach and water conditions.
• Equip yourselves with swimming skills.
