Safe guide for driving in rainy weather

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department has provided safety tips for driving in rainy weather ahead of the rainy season.

The summer season brings some rain in parts of the country. These wet roads mean that tyres may only have half as much grip on the surface as on dry roads.

Motorists will, therefore, need to adapt their driving to suit these different conditions.

EMPD safety tips:

Following distance: Keep a longer following distance from the car ahead of you. Brake earlier, enter corners at slower speeds, have a firm grip on the steering wheel, switch on the headlights in poor visibility and always focus on the road ahead.

• Wipers: Front and back windscreen wipers must be checked regularly to ensure that they are working properly.

• Brakes and tyres: It is important that motorists check that their brakes are in good working order. The condition of the tyres of the vehicle must be inspected often, as tyres with reduced tread depth may cause the vehicle to skid on wet roads.

• Safety belt: Crashes in wet conditions are common and everyone should make a conscious effort to drive safely.

Always wear your safety belt and ensure all children and passengers are also strapped in. Now is not the time to take chances with safety.
