Ekurhuleni launches summer safety awareness campaign

Under the theme 'Caring is Life Saving', the City of Ekurhuleni's MMC for community safety Khathutshelo Rasilingwane launched the summer safety awareness campaign on December 2.

MMC for Community Safety Khathutshelo Rasilingwane formally launched the summer safety awareness campaign in Skoonplaas informal settlement, Springs, on December 2.

The theme for this year is ‘Caring is Life-Saving’. The campaign will continue to grow throughout the holiday season.

To solve life-threatening catastrophes, DEMS will collaborate closely with the city’s residents and visitors.

According to Rasilingwane, these include unfavourable weather conditions associated with lightning strikes, flash floods and drowning resulting in fatalities. Parents are encouraged to take a serious approach to the safety of their children.

“One life lost is one too many in the City of Ekurhuleni. No one should be left destitute and vulnerable. DEMS will remain on high alert to assist in man-made or natural disasters within the city throughout the festive season. The safety of all city residents and visitors is our priority. Zero injuries and zero fatalities are our ultimate objectives in this period,” said Rasilingwane.

Throughout the holiday season, DEMS will interact with the public in various neighbourhoods and retail centres.

“The city’s co-strategy is to build resilient communities on all emergencies and disaster-related incidents, hence the theme ‘Caring is Life-Saving’,” said Rasilingwane.

“Residents should dial 011 458 0911 in the event of a life-threatening emergency,” she advised.

NOTE: In case of life-threatening emergencies: call 011 458 0911 which is the city`s call centre number, 10177 or cellphone emergency number 112.
