Local fighter competes in Submission Kings title fight

Heidelberger starred in Rio Grappling Title fight.

On July 9, Submission Kings held a winner-take-all Rio Grappling title fight in the middleweight division where eight fighters contested a knockout to crown the new champion.

The eight fighters were Chris Steenkamp, Jason du Randt, Tiaan Gerber, Jailson Souza, JP Kruger, Daniel Sussman, Konnor Sheehan-Benthien and Heidelberg’s own Stefan Pretorius.

In the first match Tiaan Gerber came up against Jason du Randt. Gerber was victorious in the first match.

The second match-up was Jailson Souza vs Daniel Sussmann. Jailson was victorious in the second match.

In the match three JP Kruger was against Chris Steenkamp where Kruger won and the last match was Stefan Kruger of Ability Academy against Konnor Sheehan-Benthien. Pretorius was very competitive and gave Sheehan-Benthien a real run for his money.

Sheehan-Benthien was pushed to the edge and with the last move got the better of Pretorius. Pretorius made everyone take notice him in the sport of Rio Grappling.

In the semi-finals, Gerber came up against Souza where Souza was the winner and in the second semi-final Kruger was pitted against Sheehan-Benthien. Kruger was victorious.

The final was Kruger vs Souza.

The fight had to go into extra time where Souza won the middleweight title in the Submission Kings winner-take-all title fight.
