EMPD gives tips on ways to avoid hijacking

The EMPD has been receiving countless reports on hijacking incidents which took place in similar ways and issued tips to avoid being such instances.

The newly appointed media liaison officer at the EMPD, Marie Mashishi, gave tips to avoid being hijacked.

According to Mashishi, they have been receiving complaints from vehicle owners regarding hijacking, especially in the malls whereby many individuals end up losing their lives.

“If you are being hijacked, do not resist, especially if they have a weapon, follow their instructions and cooperate with them fully, avoid eye contact with the hijackers, surrender your vehicle and move away,” said Mashishi.

Useful tips

• Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.

• Be careful of your surroundings when returning to your parked vehicle.

• Walk confidently to your car, with your key ready but hidden, and only open your car when you are close enough.

• When walking to or from your vehicle, do not use your phone.

• Even if the back seat was locked, check it before entering the car.

• Drive with a GPS and let someone know your location and possible expected arrival time.

• Stay away from high-crime areas and hotspots.

• If possible, change your route and timetable regularly.

• When the roads are long, avoid driving late at night or early in the morning.

• Try to maintain a distance between yourself and the hijackers if you find yourself in such a situation.
