Housing allocation scam alert

The public is encouraged to report any act of housing fraud.

The City of Ekurhuleni warns the public to be on high alert following a scam to solicit money from desperate home-seekers by faceless fraudsters claiming that they will put them ahead on the housing waiting list.

In the latest scam, the fraudsters invite persons who have applied for RDP houses through a statement to contact them for purported housing allocation.

The municipality distances itself from the scammer’s statement, which is also an insult to the city’s brand.
The city reassures people that RDP houses and serviced stands are not for sale.

The allocation of low-cost housing and serviced stands is conducted through a community consultative process wherein the city and councillors contact the rightful beneficiaries to give them regular updates on the status of their housing allocation.

The public is encouraged to report any act of housing fraud to the authorities, namely SAPS or to the National Anti-Corruption Hotline 0800 701 701.
