EMPD observes National Child Protection Week

Annually commemorated from May 29 to June 5, the EMPD commemorates National Child Protection Week.

In observance of National Child Protection Week, observed from May 29 to June 5, the EMPD reached out to assure children are cared for.

The EMPD urges parents and guardians to refrain from reprimanding or threatening children by calling the police on them.

Lerato Monyane, of the EMPD, said this instils fear of law enforcers in children.

“It is a problem because some of the children, when seeing officers, whether on the street or in malls, they run from them with the fear of being arrested. May parents also kindly assist us by letting children greet officers on the road and in malls in order for them to build relations,” she said.

As the EMPD, she told the Alberton RECORD they work hand in hand with children under the social crime unit.

“We really need parents and guardians to spread the word that children are our friends. They need to feel free around officers of the law, so that it is easy for them to tell the officer whatever that is bothering them,” said Monyane.
